New Rangers Hitting Coach: CLINT HURDLE For the first time since 1995, the Texas Rangers have hired a new hitting coach. Former Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle replaces Rudy Jaramillo who turned down a one-year offer to return for his 16th season as hitting coach. Rangers general manager Jon Daniels formally announced the hiring of Hurdle on November 5th. “Clint adds another experienced, successful coach to our major league staff,” said Daniels. “He’s demonstrated ability to communicate, motivate, and emphasize a team-first offensive mentality. We welcome him, Karla and their family, and look forward to their contributions to the organization and our community.” Hurdle managed the Rockies for seven-plus seasons from April, 2002 thru May, 2009. Prior taking over as manager, Hurdle was the Rockies hitting coach for five seasons. As manager, he led the Rockies to a National League pennant in 2007 before a World Series loss to the Red Sox. After leaving the Rockies earlier this spring (May), he spent time as a guest analyst for the MLB Network. During his stint as the Rockies hitting coach, the team compiled the National League’s top two averages in a span of 70 years (.294 in 2000 and .292 in 2001) and the league’s most base hits since 1930 (1,664 in 2000). The Rockies also established the National League’s highest batting average in each of Hurdle’s five seasons, leading in on-base percentage three times and slugging percentage on four occasions. |
